Officier de l'USAAF né le 22 août 1919 à Hollins (Virginie), Robert Woody rejoint la Garde Nationale de Virginie et sert comme simple soldat avec le 116th Régiment d'Infanterie du 1 juillet 1939 au 2 février 1941, Promu Sous-Lieutenant le 3 février 1941 puis Lieutenant le 1 février 1942, il demande à être transféré dans l'USAAF, obtenant sa qualification de pilote le 14 janvier 1943 à Spencer Field (Georgie). Affecté au 354th Fighter Squadron / 355th Fighter Group en 1943, il totalise 472 heures de vol à la fin de l'année dont 217 de formation initiale. Promu Capitaine le 24 avril 1944, il est transféré au QG de la 8th Air Force le 22 mai 1944 et regagne les Etats-Unis en septembre 1944. Au cours du séjour qu'il effectue au sein de cette unité, il remporte 9 victoires confirmées en combat aérien, dont 4 en collaboration.

Resté dans l'Air Foorce après guerre, il est promu Major le 8 août 1949, Lieutenant Colonel le 14 mai 1954 et se retire en janvier 1968.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Robert E. Woody (0-411901), Captain (Air Corps), U.S. Army Air Forces, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Pilot of a P-51 Fighter Airplane in the 354th Fighter Squadron, 355th Fighter Group, EIGHTH Air Force, in aerial combat against enemy forces on 24 April 1944. On this date Captain Woody shot down four enemy aircraft and assisted in destruction of a fifth. Captain Woody's unquestionable valor in aerial combat is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 8th Air Force, and the United States Army Air Forces.
