At R/V with the bombers, Whiteman Yellow flight in which I was number 3 dove to break up a forming queue of 22 E/A at 2 o'clock 3000 feet below. On the first pass, I fired at 500 yards with no results. I made a second pass and turned to drive a Me 109, coming in at 9 o'clock to number 1, Captain Malmstedt. The E/A broke off in a half roll, I fired but with no results. I then turned back to the original target, two Me 109's diving. They had meanwhile turned and I fired at 100 yards with a 30 degree deflection. I saw a few hits on the E/A, which half rolled out. We then turned back in the direction of the bombers.

About fifty miles SW of Bremen I observed about two miles to the right an ME 109 on number two man in a flight of four P-38's, the second element of which directly over his head and in no position to help him. I took my element down and closed on the ME 109 who was following the P-38 at fifty yards. Shooting while closing, I observed a big explosion on the (illeg) ME-109. I had fired last at 125 yards at five degree deflection. The ME 109 went off, and down apparently out of control, smoking heavily. During my shooting I observed the ME 109 making hits on the right engine of the P-38.

Two miles west of Bremen we sighted the bombers composed of four boxes. Three miles to the right there were approximately ten DO 217's with rockets and five FW 190's headed all practically on line formation towards the bombers. Whiteman Yellow flight of which I was a number three man turned into them dropping our belly tanks. I fired head on but at long range, They then all fired there (sic) rockets at ineffective range to the bombers. We went past them and I turned my element coming down on them. They were breaking and I took a lucky sixty degree deflection (at 300 yards) shot at an FW 190. There was definite smoke and the aircraft went out of control into a flat slow spin down thru the clouds seven thousand feet below, spinning about eight times. I then rejoined the bombers.

During sweep while leading Whiteman Blue Flight, composed of six ships, the Squadron Leader, Major Webb, made a circle. We were at 13,000 ft. south of Lille. We completed 270 degrees when two ME 109's came in at 11 o'clock headed for my last element. I turned into same and fired at 60 degree deflection at about 200 yards range. I observed a few scattered hits on the wings with no apparent effect, but the ME 109's broke from their attack. I claim 2 ME 109's damaged.
