Swindle White Leader and I were in a climbing left turn at approximately 22,000 feet. We had just pulled up from at (sic) attack made on several FW 190's who had singled out one P-38. We noticed one FW 190 approaching from above and out of the sun, about 10 o'clock to our position. We tightened our turn, established a good lead, and fired like hell. Enemy aircraft was very close as he passed down and in front of us, the cross and red nose being very apparent. Swindle Leader, Major Joel, saw enemy aircraft explode by looking in his rear view mirror. I noticed the sudden stop of the aircraft, the explosion, and burning plane as I looked back over my right shoulder.
