Né en 1923, John Hockery s'engage dans l'Armée de réserve en 1942. Il obtient ses ailes et ses galons de Sous Lieutenant le 10 novembre 1942. En novembre 1943, il est affecté au 82 FS / 78 FG avec lequel il remporte 7 victoires au printemps 1944. Lorsqu'il arrive à l'unité, il dispose de 507 heures de vol. Après son premier tour d'opérations, il rentre aux Etats-Unis et revient le 30 septembre 1944, devenant commandant du "A" Flight".

Resté dans l'USAF après guerre, il participe à la guerre de Corée à partir d'août 1952 avec le 39 FIS / 51 FIW et remporte une dernière victoire. A son arrivée en Corée, le total de ses heures de vol était de 994 heures comme pilote qualifié.
