Né en 1924 dans l'Illinois, "Hoot" Gibson s'engage dans l'Armée de Réserve le 10 juin 1943 comme Cadet et termine son entraînement le 22 décembre 1944 en même temps qu'il reçoit ses galons de Flying Officier à Aloe Field au Texas. Promu Sous-Lieutenant le 22 mars 1946 il rejoint l'Armée Régulière le 19 juin 1947 puis l'Air Force. Promu Lieutenant le 20 novembre 1947, il est affecté au 335th FIS / 4th FIW à la fin de l'année 1950 pour servir en Corée. A cette époque, il compte 1792 heures de vol à son actif. Remportant 5 victoires au cours de l'année 1951, il fait partie des premiers pilotes américains à atteindre le statut d'As et sera le 3eme à abattre 5 appareils le 9 septembre 1951.

Promu Capitaine le 25 octobre, puis Major le 22 avril 1957 et Lieutenant Colonel le 21 juin 1964, il termine sa carrière après avoir été promu Colonel le 26 juillet 1968. Il obtient aussi en 1966 un diplôme en Histoire à l'Université du Maryland.
