Officier de l'USAAF, John Cunnick rejoint le 38th Fighter Squadron / 55th Fighter Group le 18 janvier 1945. En l'espace de quelques semaines, il détruit ou endommage un grand nombre d'appareils allemands, tant en combat aérien qu'au sol. En 37 missions de combat, il remporte 2 victoires confirmées et reçoit 10 Air Medals. Le 6 février 1945, après avoir effectué un atterrissage forcé, il parvient à rentrer à sa base après deux jours de trajet. Le 6 avril 1945, il est promu Flight Commander au sein de son Squadron. Son appareil habituel était le P-51D / CG-U / "My Kitten" . Il quitte l'unité en juillet 1945 et gagne le 503rd Fighter Squadron / 339th Fighter Group.

En 2007, il participait à une réunion de vétérans du 55th FG.
