Officier de l'USAAF, Kenneth Crawford est affecté au 38th Fighter Squadron / 55th Fighter Group le 16 mai 1944. Le 11 septembre 1944, alors qu'il vole comme ailier du Lt Earl R Fryer, les deux hommes attaquent 2 Me 109 dont ils abattent chacun un exemplaire. Se lançant à la poursuite d'une autre section de deux Me 109, les deux pilotes américains poursuivent chacun un appareil qui prennent des directions opposés. Le Lt Fryer perd alors de vue son équipier qui ne rentre pas à la base. Un rapport allemand indiquera que le jeune pilote a abandonné son P-51D no. 44-13723 "One Mustang" en parachute. Retrouvé grièvement blessé, avec notamment une fracture du crâne, il décède le lendemain à l'hôpital. Son appareil habituel était le P-51D / CG-Z / 44-13804 "Arabel". Inhumé dans un premier temps à Oberhaf en Allemagne, son corps sera rapatrié plus tard à Fresno en Californie.

On 11 September 1944, Lt. Crawford was flying my wing when we became engaged with a number of Me 109's. We broke into two Jerries that were making a pass at our squadron. In the chase that followed I observed Lt. Crawford getting many hits on one of the E/A and eventually the pilot baled out of his ship and the plane crashed. After this we spotted two more 109's below us which we attacked, and in the fight that developed from this bounce my wingman and I split up. Lt. Crawford did not return. In his behalf, I wish to claim one Me 109 destroyed as the result of the combat.
