Hank Buttelmann S'engage dans l'Air Force le 23 novembre 1947 et obtient son brevet de pilote le 2 août 1952 en même temps que ses galons de Sous-Lieutenant. il est affecté au 25th FIS / 51st FIW en novembre 1952 en Corée et promu Lieutenant dans le même temps. Fin janvier 1953, il ne dispose que de 95 heures d'expérience de vol en tant que pilote breveté. Il participe activement aux combats qui se déroulent au Nord de la Corée et remporte 7 victoire au cours de ce conflit. Il est promu Capitaine le 23 janvier 1958 et Major le 9 décembre 1964 et enfin Lieutenant Colonel le 8 mai 1968.
